Everest Base Camp Overview

The trek is structured with a 11-day walk starting and ending in Lukla where you will fly in from Kathmandu. A few days in Kathmandu are planned at the end of the trek, but these days could serve as a safeguard for possible extensions of the trek due to unforeseen hitches in the trek or slips in the return air flight from Lukla. If there are no problems these days can be used to visit the capital, its UNESCO heritage squares and temples.

The trek will travel clockwise in a loop from Namche, a hub of caravan and tourist routes, where we will have a chance to acclimatize, and will have an appendage to Everest Base Camp and KalaPatar  at over 5,000, in environments one different from the other.

Upon landing in Lukla, we will put on our boots and hand over our luggage to the porters so that we keep only the day pack at all times; then we will set off on our trek following the valley northward. After acclimatizing in Namche we will definitely climb in altitude to reach, its fantastic first view of Cho Oyu. We will then descend to Gokyo where we can visit the enchanting periglacial lake and enjoy the incredible view of the Ngozumba glacier that divides Nepal from Tibet. After crossing it, and then descend until we enter the Kumbu valley with its very famous glacier, the access route to the highest peak in the world. We will ascend the valley to base camp to gain the amazing view of Everest and a small peak, Kala Patar at elevation 5545, which faces Everest and from which the sunrise will be a stunning sight. We will then descend the Kumbu valley lapping the very long moraine. here only descent, first to Namche and then to Lukla, leaving behind the impressive number of peaks over 6000 m and the beautiful Ama Dablam. Now only the flight to Khatmandu and sightseeing will await us.

Itinerary

Meet our representative at Kathmandu airport and transfer to hotel. All the required documents, photos, passport copies etc. are collected for the preparation of all legal documents required during the trek. On the same day you'll be meeting your guide for the trek.

Meeting with porters and start trekking to Phakding village on the valley floor. Passing the kani, the ceremonial arch, we will enter the valley floor furrowed by the rushing Dudh Kosi River, cross a suspension bridge and ascend to our destination. Possibility of a short hike afterwards to the Rio sanctuary village of Gompa.

We will still travel along the valley floor aided by more suspension bridges and by now in the middle of the forest of pines, rhododendrons, magnolias and huge firs passing through several small villages that make their living from tourism and agriculture, until we reach the entrance to Sagarmantha National Park, established in 1976 to protect the Kumbu area. A section of trail that skirts mantras carved into a large granite wall, a vertiginous suspension bridge and the first glimpse of Everest will lead us to Namche Bazar. Possibility of visiting the Sagarmatha National Park museum or the monastery.

After breakfast we will be heading towards Everest View hotel  and on the way we will be going to National park headquarter from where we can see the panoromic view of Mt. Everest , Mt. Lhotse ,Mt.Nupse, Mt. Amabdlam Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Thauche , Mt. Kyangde etc. From the Everest view hotel also we will be seeing the same view.

We start our walk to our next destination i.e. Thengboche immediately after breakfast. It takes around 5-6 hrs to reach there. Thengboche is home to the region’s largest monastery, a destination for monks of all ages throughout the country to practice and study Buddhism. The public is invited to witness their puja ceremonies, where they chant prayers and perform rituals inside the ornately decorated gompas.

Very early wakeup call and visit the impressive morning puja in Thengboche Monastery. Breakfast after the puja and start today’s trek to Pangboche. Pangboche, at 3.985m is the highest permanent settlement on the approach to Everest and in the upper village there is a gompa (monastery) founded by the lama Sange Dorje. Pangboche offers great views on what many people consider as the most beautiful moutainpeak in the Himalayas, Mount Ama Dablam. We continue to walk upto Dingboche (4400m). Altogether it takes around 5-6 hrs to reach Dingboche.

We spend a day at Dingboche (4410m) to continue our acclimatisation. Those adapting well to the altitude can climb Nangkartshang Peak at 5100m for great views of Chalotse, Tawoche and Mount Ama Dablam. Or we can go to Chhukum valley.

Back on the trek again, the trail from Dingboche ascends, emerging onto the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier from where we have a beautiful panorama of the peaks lying on the Nepal-Tibet border. The trail then eases off as we follow the valley to Lobuche (4.900m) a tiny hamlet with a few teahouses. The sunset on Nuptse is not to be missed. Altogether  it is a trek about 5-6 hrs till Lobuche from Dingboche.

Another long day and again we leave very early. Trekking across a glacier, the trail winds up and down through fascinating icy series of land known as Everest Base Camp, where, usually in spring, we may see some of the expedition teams as they prepare to climb the mountain. From the Base Camp we get fantastic close up views of the Khumbu Ice Fall and we can appreciate just how difficult it is to negotiate a route through the huge blocks of ice. We descend from the Base Camp to Gorak Shep and night stay in Gorak shep.

Early in the morning we will be heading to the Kalapathar. It takes around 2 hrs to the top of the Kalapathar. It is one of the highest point of our trekking from where we can see the view of sun rise and the fascinating view of the mountains ( Mt. Everest , Mt. Lhotse , Mt. Nupse, Mt. Pumo Ri ,Mt. Makalu and much more ). Then we head back to Gorak Shep and after breakfast we start our trek to Pheriche. It taks altogether 6-7 hrs from Gorak shep to Phriche.

After the breakfast, we start our trek down to Namche Bazar. It takes around 6-7 hrs to reach Namche Bazar from Pheriche.

Finally this is the last day of our trek. As such, we will be heading to Lukla after breakfast. It will take around 6-7 hrs to reach Lukla from Namche Bazar.

Early in the morning after having the breakfast , we will go to Lukla airport to head back to Kathmandu. After 35 minutes flight with a scenic view of the nature, we will reach Kathmandu.
